DJURGÅRDEN

djurgarden_stockholm_c_00

Beloved by both Stockholmers and visitors, Djurgården is a tranquil oasis in the middle of Stockholm. The island has been in possession of the crown since the 15th century. Like no other place in Stockholm it collects many of the city’s most famous museums and cultural attractions (the Vasa Museum, Gröna Lund, the Abba museum and Skansen to name a few) with green nature, parks, and family-friendly activities. Djurgården can be reached by bus, tram or ferry from central Stockholm. Though on a beautiful summer day a walk along Strandvägen, from The Royal Dramatic Theatre to Djurgårdsbron, is highly recommended. (Text: Visitstockholm.com)

GAMLA STAN

gamlastan_stockholm_c_00
Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe, and one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm. This is where Stockholm was founded in 1252.
All of Gamla Stan and the adjacent island of Riddarholmen are like a living pedestrian-friendly museum full of sights, attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars, and places to shop. Gamla Stan is also popular with aficionados of handicrafts, curious, and souvenirs. The narrow winding cobblestone streets, with their buildings in so many different shades of gold, give Gamla Stan its unique character. Even now cellar vaults and frescoes from the Middle Ages can be found behind the visible facades, and on snowy winter days, the district feels like something from a storybook. KUNGSHOLMEN

Kungsholmen is primarily a residential island, where you’ll have a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Lots of lively restaurants, bars, and cafés are found here, especially along Hantverkargatan and Fleminggatan. Kungsholmen is home to the most prominent building of the Stockholm skyline, the City Hall. If you get the chance, don’t miss climbing the tower to be amazed by the incredible view. The City Center is the place for affordable shopping, especially for the young and trendy. Drottninggatan and the area between Sergels Torg and Kungsträdgården offer a mix of clothing chains and large-scale classic Stockholm department stores. Åhléns City, where Drottninggatan ends at Sergels Torg, is a popular department store with most of the best Swedish brands. (Text: Visitstockholm.com)

SÖDERMALM

sodermalm_stockholm_c_02
Greta Garbo grew up on the edges of trendy Södermalm when the area was still a poor, run-down working-class neighborhood. It is hard to imagine that the star of silent cinema was born in a tiny studio apartment at Blekingegatan 32 on September 18, 1905. That building has since been demolished, but the house located there now is still referred to as the Garbo House. Greta Garbos Torg, the square near Katarina Bangata named after her, is a lush cobblestone place, perfect for contemplating on the Hollywood legend and Söder’s transformation. VASASTAN

The streets of Vasastan have a homey feel to them, as this is mostly a residential area. An abundance of small local restaurants populates the area, mainly concentrated around Odenplan and St. Eriksplan. Rörstrandsgatan is a street worthy of a closer look.
Small shops and vintage stores are sprinkled around this part of town. Architecture buffs should stop by the Stadsbiblioteket library, designed by Gunnar Asplund. The big park Vasaparken is perfect for picnics in the summer and ice skating in the winter. (Text: Visitstockholm.com)

ÖSTERMALM

Ingmar Bergman grew up in a religious household, first on Villagatan 22 and then Storgatan 3, in the privileged neighborhood of Östermalm. The contradiction of the Christian message of love and his father’s strict disciplinary rule became an artistic theme for Bergman. Bergman returned to Östermalm throughout his life.
A movie about horses at the Sture-Teatern theater (Birger Jarlsgatan 28-30) launched his life-long love of cinema, and the first office of the production company Cinematograph was in Östermalm. Ingmar Bergmans Plats and Ingmar Bergmans Gata, the square and street named in his honor, are both located just behind the Royal Dramatic Theatre. (Text: Visitstockholm.com)
